Hey, I Heard You Were a Wild One: When Things Go Wrong for You in the Social Media World
I am Nauman Akbar, founder and owner of MessageMuse, a full service digital marketing company. Owning and running a digital marketing agency gives me a chance to see all sorts of interesting things in the social media world. What I am always surprised by is how things can go wrong—very wrong—in such a short time. Whether it is a restaurant review, or a comment you made but didn’t give a moment’s thought about, or a picture you posted standing next to someone famous, the warp speed at which things can turn on you is rather amazing. In fact, many of our clients come to us after a situation turns bad. A professional digital marketing agency can help correct things that have gone wrong with reputation management techniques but our preference is to create a strategy to prevent problems before they happen.
As in previous articles, my focus was on professional digital marketing of business and professional accounts. If you want to get your relatives mad at you by talking about Auntie on your private Facebook account, then have at it. Not being invited to the next family reunion is something you can survive. But if your business is bullied and shamed on digital marketing forums, it could mean closing your doors for good. In the discussion below, I will share with you some of my best advice that I have collected over more than two decades in the digital marketing business.
Dress yourself in kryptonite
Some folks are more sensitive than others. And those are the people who need to toughen up a bit. The world is rough out there in social media land and some people are just itchin’ for a fight. They will poke you in all sorts of ways to get you to react. Sometimes my clients are ready to swallow the bait. And that is why they need a reputation manager who will diffuse the situation and provide some perspective.
If you want to see someone who is a master at letting water role off the ducks back, you have to look no further than Salim Ghauri, Founder and CEO of NetSol Technologies. I have been fortunate to provide Salim Ghauri with digital marketing services for several years now. And I have to say, he has the grace of a prince when it comes to accepting what people say and not taking it to heart. His humble responses are so disarming that the very people who have poked at him come to love him. But most of us are not so gracious of heart. And some pokes can be very inappropriate and undeserved.
Take for instance the customer who entered a restaurant with a chip on his shoulder and was asked to leave. When he got home he launched a crowd shaming escapade and had hundreds of friends post bad reviews on the restaurant’s Facebook page. By the end of the day, the eatery that had a 5-star rating was down to two stars with hateful comments posted by people who had never visited the place much less eaten there
These are the situations that a reputation manager can control. Proper reporting of abuse, blocking of groups, and positive and appropriate responses can neutralize a bad situation. So if you are going to swim in shark infested waters, you need a digital marketing agency with lots of skill to keep you safe.
Mind what you say and the company you keep
Some situations like the ones discussed above are brought on through no fault of the person who has launched a digital marketing strategy. But a fair amount of grief is brought on by the client himself. My best advice? Avoid all the topics you would normally avoid at a family reunion: politics, religion, and your in-laws. Save your personal opinions for private discussions and avoid using your social media platform to voice your feelings. As I mentioned in a previous article, I Put a Spell on You, stay focused on your professional goals and don’t use your social media platform for a soapbox.
The other area to be mindful of is the company you keep. Digital marketing agencies can see some real nosedives in sentiments if their client is pictured with someone who has fallen out of favor. And the impact lasts a long time. A knowledgeable digital marketing agency will know the techniques to bury the post but a digital marketing agency will also know how to avoid these problems too—if they have a chance to.
While this is not a common problem for most, stalkers do have to be dealt with on occasion. A vigilant digital marketing agency will be like a helicopter parent when it comes to their clients. They watch for inappropriate and in some cases, just plain creepy posts and take appropriate action immediately before the situation escalates. As a reputation manager, I have no qualms at all about blocking people who make inappropriate comments. I have no problem reporting them to the social media platforms that they posted on. I monitor and control my client’s sites so that they don’t have to. Remember, digital marketing agencies provide the support and guidance to their clients so they are free to build their success and achieve their goals.
