My blog today is a bit off the technology path but a necessary acknowledgement from a dad with three amazing daughters. So, for once, please indulge this commentary.

Today we celebrate International Women’s Day. As a father of three girls, I feel the angst that we still have to have such special days to bring focus to a problem that has long been with us. What most of us forget about this day is that it exists for two reasons—to encourage the professional path for women and to provide parity in pay for the work they do. It is not enough to applaud all women for just being. This day is one that should create action among those influencing young women. We should look at our message that we give our children—not just what we say but what we do. Every part of our interaction should be the reinforcement that you can achieve academically what your heart gives you passion for. You are not limited by your gender. It is a commitment to support those career choices that our daughters make and to encourage them to reach as far as their hearts and brains let them. It has nothing to do with how they look, how obedient they are, or how accepting they can be. It is how they can stand on their own merit and use their thinking and skills to propel them forward.

And if we encourage them to achieve—to be creative and independent thinkers, to educate themselves in a profession—then let’s hope the world understands that they should get the same pay as any man for doing the same job. As a father of young women, the thought that my daughters are worth less than a man in what they contribute to a business enterprise is a hard reality to swallow. Educational institutions don’t charge less for classes and my daughters will not give less in doing their work. I know this because I see their drive even in their youth.

It is easy to go with the status quo and for companies it is cheaper too. But as a father the idea that my daughters will not have the same opportunities and financial rewards is a distressing reality. Everything changes when your world is filled with daughters. You suddenly understand the importance of this day.

So on this International Women’s Day, let us have one wish. Let us wish that this day is no longer needed because we as a society have come to understand that equality must be achieved at all levels and in all ways. I want it for my daughters and for yours. After all, these young women are our future and they have much to offer our world.
